Two ways to lose

UNIQLO does not really sell fleece. It sells LifeWear, the idea that a plain, well-made basic is a considered choice rather than a cheap one. That idea worked on a lot of people, this writer included, because it gave them a way to describe themselves: not fashionable, not stingy, just sensible. But the idea only survives because the fleece does. It goes through a few winters and a lot of wash cycles and still holds its shape. Take that away and the whole story falls apart within a season. The material is what keeps the philosophy honest.

Now run the same thing backwards. The story that makes people love a brand also raises the bar they hold it to, and a brand people love gets judged harder than one they merely use.
