A young woman stands in the middle of a glamorous fashion photoshoot. Bright studio lights illuminate the set as photographers direct her every pose. Suddenly, she notices a growing crowd of young people marching outside. They carry handmade signs, play musical instruments, and chant messages of unity and hope. Curious, she pauses, removes her blonde wig, wipes off her lipstick, and quietly walks away from the photoshoot to join the procession.
As the march continues through the city streets, the atmosphere changes. The crowd eventually faces a line of police officers standing silently, creating a moment of visible tension. Instead of confrontation, the young woman steps forward carrying a can of Pepsi. She offers it to one of the officers. He accepts it with a smile. The tension instantly disappears. The crowd erupts in applause and celebration, as if a single can of soft drink has dissolved social conflict and brought people together.
This was Pepsi's Live For Now campaign, released globally in April 2017 and featuring Kendall Jenner. Rather than becoming an inspiring celebration of unity, the advertisement quickly became one of the most controversial brand campaigns in modern marketing history. Within hours of its release, it was criticized across social media and news for trivializing social justice movements and reducing complex societal issues to a simplistic commercial message. Facing intense public backlash, Pepsi withdrew the advertisement within twenty-four hours and issued a public apology, admitting that the campaign had "missed the mark."
